Joshua 3

As Israel came up to the crossing into their new land, the promised land, there was a lot of expectation and pressure. It was heavenly stuff that they had to march straight into a battle.

We all go through times of change, as we step forward in faith. It can be hard to remember that God is with us - but let this passage encourage you!

Following means following

The ark of the covenant went out first - at a great distance. This was showing the people that God's innaproachable glory was leading them forward. He was guiding them into this unknown so they could see the way to go. They weren't to press ahead but follow behind.

This is a temptation for us - we can be tempted to rush ahead without stopping to consider if God is leading us that way, or if it's our worldly desires. We need to follow God and ask Him to lead the way before we make any decisions or follow opportunities. Make sure you are doing God's thing rather than your own thing. We are priveliged post-pentecost that God's presence is not 900m ahead, but here inside us as the Holy Spirit. We can experience guidance from Him through that.

Before they crossed the people consecrated themselves. They devoted themselves wholly to God. He wants us to be 100% in with Him.

The obstacle of fear

When we need to step out in faith, often it is fear that holds us back. Fear that it won't work. For the Israelites it was both the dangerous river and the armies of the nations before them that they feared.

But God promised them that they would be safe, and the splitting of the river was a demonstration of God's power that was with them. This would remind them of the exodus across the Red Sea and God making a way for them and God coming through for them. That was enough to wipe away their fear.

When you are afraid of stepping out, think about times in your past when God came through for you. Use your memories to fuel your faith going forwards. Echo the words of Romans 8:31-39 to yourself and be bold in stepping out.
